WAPA Secretary General Philippe Binard said: &ldquo;This forecast is issued for the global apple and pear sector amid uncertainties, including geopolitical tensions, rising production costs, the impact of rising logistics costs and limited container availability, labor shortages and growing concerns about reduced consumption due to the economic situation.&rdquo;
The Southern Hemisphere apple harvest forecast for 2022 suggests a decline of 7% to 4,864,000 tons compared to last year (5,217,000 tons), mainly due to a decrease of 30% in Brazil and 11% in Argentina. Australia and Chile are also forecast to cut their production by 3% and 2% respectively. New Zealand and South Africa are the only countries where apple production is expected to increase (15% and 4% respectively). Chile is expected to remain the largest producer of apples in the Southern Hemisphere in 2022 (1,455,000 tons), followed by South Africa (1,163,000 tons), Brazil (900,000 tons), New Zealand (590,000 tons), Argentina ( 445,000 tons), and Australia (311,000 tons). With 1,706,000 tons, Gala remains the most popular apple variety, although its production is expected to decrease by 7% compared to 2021. Large volumes are exported by New Zealand (+17%) and South Africa (+6%), offsetting a 65% decline in Brazilian apple exports.
For pears, Southern Hemisphere producers forecast a 6% decline in yields to 1,229,000 tons. This is mainly due to a decrease of 13% in Argentina, 11% in Chile and 6% in Australia. On the other hand, New Zealand and South Africa are expected to increase their production by 31% and 5% respectively. Argentina remains the largest producer in the Southern Hemisphere (522,000t), followed by South Africa (492,000t), Chile (122,000t), Australia (81,000t) and New Zealand (11,000t). Packham&rsquo;s Triumph remains the most produced variety (444,000 tons, despite a 4% decrease compared to 2021), followed by Williams&rsquo; bon chr&eacute;tien pears (306,000 tons). Export figures are expected to decrease by 6% compared to 2021 to 641,207 t, mainly due to a 14% decrease in Argentina's exports.
In the Northern Hemisphere, US inventories as of February 1 were 1,478,180 t (-1% yoy) for apples and 149,553 t for pears (+32% yoy). In Europe, stocks of apples and pears were 3,606,980 tons (7% more than last year) and 408,340 tons (30% less than last year).
Philippe Binard commented: &ldquo;Seasonal changes clearly demonstrate the impact of logistics and costs on international trade, including for suppliers from the Northern Hemisphere, as the US concentrates sales of apples and pears in North America. European markets continue to be affected by the embargo against Belarus, while recent developments in Ukraine will also affect sales in all Eastern European countries, including Russia, for all global suppliers of apples and pears. It is important to continue to step up efforts to stimulate consumption.&rdquo;
The WAPA Annual General Meeting also featured a discussion on CO2 emissions and how apple and pear production can achieve carbon neutrality or even contribute positively to the environment.

On February 24, 2022, the World Apple and Pear Association (WAPA) published a forecast for the harvest of apples and pears in the Southern Hemisphere for the upcoming season. Based on data from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, New Zealand and South Africa, apple and pear production will decline by 7% and 6% respectively in 2022 compared to the previous year, according to the forecast.
